Realm 1 — Phase 1

Mystical Sanctum

The oldest inhabited Realm of Avalon. Six locations, four key NPCs, a stolen Fortress Key, and a boss who was once the island's greatest archivist.

1. Lore & History

The Mystical Sanctum was Avalon's seat of magical scholarship for over three centuries. Its centrepiece was the Ancient Library — a repository of every piece of magical knowledge ever discovered on the island. Scholars travelled from every Realm to study there. The Order of the Seer, a monastic tradition of prophets and archivists, administered the Library and its satellite communities.

When the Forgetting began, the Order attempted to record everything — believing that if enough was written down, the erasure could be slowed. They were partially right. The Mystical Sanctum has lost less of its history than any other Realm. But the act of recording everything attracted the Forgetting's attention. The Chief Archivist, Caelum, attempted to contain the Forgetting inside a single vessel by binding it to himself. The ritual failed catastrophically. Caelum became The Whispering Shade — an entity that now spreads the Forgetting rather than containing it, looping the Library's memories in an endless echo.

The surviving members of the Order fled to Misty Village and the outlying settlements. Vara, the last Seer of the Order, remains at Portal Clearing to guide new arrivals.

2. Locations

Location Description Enemies Encounter Rate Key Items / NPCs
Portal Clearing A ring of ancient stones surrounding a shimmering portal. Your starting area. Mist clings to the ground; the stones pulse with residual magic. Glade Wisp 20% Vara the Seer
Misty Village A cluster of stone cottages half-swallowed by fog. The only safe settlement in the Sanctum. Lanterns burn at every doorway — residents believe light keeps the Forgetting at bay. None 0% Old Maren, Merchant Thorn, Travel Ration
Whispering Glade A dense forest clearing where the trees lean inward as if listening. Pale lights drift between the branches. The air smells of earth and old rain. Shadow Beast, Glade Wisp 45% Maren's Lantern (quest item)
Ancient Library Towering shelves of crumbling books disappear into darkness above. Some volumes are completely blank — their words stolen by the Forgetting. A single lamp burns at a reading desk where the Chronicler sits, endlessly cataloguing. Phantom Soldier, Memoria Wraith 30% The Chronicler, Codex Page
Marsh of Echoes A vast cold wetland where the mist repeats the words of anyone who speaks. Pools of black water reflect skies that are not the one above. Travellers report hearing their own voices from paths they never walked. Shadow Beast, Glade Wisp, Marsh Wraith 55% Marsh Herb, Memory Vial (crafting materials)
Forgotten Fortress A vast stone stronghold whose name has been scoured from every carved surface. Gate Guardians — Phantom Soldiers locked in endless patrol — protect the inner door. The iron gate requires the Fortress Key to open. Phantom Soldier, Memoria Wraith, Gate Guardian 65% Fortress Key (from Gate Guardian loot)
Memoria Stone Chamber The heart of the fortress. A vast circular room with a crystalline monolith at its centre — the Memoria Stone — pulsing with pale light. Thousands of whispered voices overlap. The Whispering Shade coils around the stone. Boss room: encounter rate 100%. The Whispering Shade (Boss) 100% Shard of Memory (main quest item)

3. NPCs

Vara the Seer

Location: Portal Clearing
Role: Quest giver, guide, exposition

Vara is the last fully-trained Seer of the Order. She predicted your arrival through a series of visions three months before the portal opened. She knows more about the Forgetting's origin than she initially reveals — her full dialogue tree only unlocks after you complete the first quest arc.

Class note: Seer and Mentalist players unlock additional dialogue options with Vara, including the hidden questline The Prophecy Reversed.

Old Maren

Location: Misty Village
Role: Side quest giver, local lore

Maren is in her eighties and has lived in Misty Village since before the Forgetting began. She remembers Caelum — The Whispering Shade — as a young scholar who visited the village every harvest festival. She gives you the quest to find her lost lantern in Whispering Glade, which leads to discovering the first Shadow Beast nest.

Merchant Thorn

Location: Misty Village
Role: Shop, reputation vendor

Thorn is the only merchant operating within the Mystical Sanctum. He sells Health Potions, Spirit Tonics, and basic weapons. Prices decrease as your Mystical Sanctum faction reputation increases. At Honored status, he stocks greater potions and a rare Obsidian Dagger.

Rogue bonus: Rogues receive a built-in 10% discount with all merchants due to their Persuasion stat.

The Chronicler

Location: Ancient Library
Role: Codex unlock, lore vendor

The Chronicler is not human — or at least, not entirely. He is the Library's living catalogue: a construct created by the Order to remember what the books forgot. He trades Codex Pages (dropped by enemies) for lore entries that unlock in your Codex system. Each lore entry provides +5% XP for related quest types.

6. Boss: The Whispering Shade

The Whispering Shade is the possessed remnant of Caelum, the Order's Chief Archivist. After his failed ritual, his physical body dissolved but his consciousness — and the three centuries of catalogued knowledge he carried — remained, bound to the Memoria Stone. The Forgetting has since consumed most of that knowledge, leaving only the echo of the act of remembering itself: an entity that whispers, ceaselessly, the names it can no longer quite recall.

Phase Behaviour

  • Rounds 1–3: Rotates between Basic Attack and Memory Drain. Cascade of Loss fires on round 3 if MP ≥ 150.
  • Rounds 4–7: Adds Forgotten Names (stun) into rotation. Targets player with Spectral Wail when below 50% HP.
  • Round 8+: If boss HP is below 150, it enters a desperate phase and attacks twice per turn. Cascade of Loss fires every 2 rounds if MP allows.
  • MP Depletion: When MP drops to 0, boss can no longer use Cascade of Loss. This typically happens around round 6. The fight becomes significantly easier after this point.
Lore note: When you deliver the Shard of Memory to Vara, she reveals that Caelum was her teacher. The ending dialogue changes depending on whether you have unlocked Vara's full dialogue tree before reaching the boss.
