Avalon Game Guide

Beginner's Guide to Avalon

Everything you need to start your journey through the cursed island — from choosing a class to winning your first battle.

Quick Start

Avalon is a free-to-play dark fantasy browser RPG. No download, no account required — just click Play Avalon, select New Game, and you are inside the world in under a minute.

The story begins when you emerge from a portal on the island of Avalon — a once-magnificent realm now slowly being destroyed by a magical plague called The Forgetting, which erases memories, people, and places. Your quest: find the four Seals hidden across Avalon's Realms and stop the plague before nothing remains.

1. Choosing Your Class

Your class determines your starting stats, playstyle, and which dialogue options you can unlock. There are three classes available in Phase 1:

Seer

Best for: Magic users, puzzle-solvers

High Intelligence and Perception. The Seer commands spirits and reads ruins. Fragile in direct combat, but devastating with preparation. Best class for uncovering hidden lore.

  • Starting HP: 80 • MP: 120
  • Bonus: +20% Mana regen, access to hidden magic objects
  • Weakness: Low HP, vulnerable to physical attacks

Rogue

Best for: Stealth, exploration, trading

High Agility and Perception. The Rogue navigates shadows, poisons enemies, and always finds the best prices. Excellent for players who prefer avoiding combat entirely.

  • Starting HP: 100 • MP: 70
  • Bonus: +20% Stealth, better merchant prices
  • Weakness: Low magical defence

Mentalist

Best for: Dialogue, strategy, diplomacy

High Intelligence and Willpower. The Mentalist reads minds, persuades enemies to stand down, and unlocks hidden dialogue paths. Slow in combat but nearly unstoppable with preparation.

  • Starting HP: 90 • MP: 110
  • Bonus: +20% Insight, hidden dialogue unlocked
  • Weakness: Slowest combat class

Tempter (Phase 3, 18+) will be unlocked in a future update. See full Class Guide →

2. Understanding Stats

Every hero has eight core attributes. These grow as you level up and can be increased by spending stat points (+3 per level).

StatWhat it does
Strength (STR)Physical damage, HP pool
Intelligence (INT)Magical damage, MP pool, puzzle bonuses
Agility (AGI)Flee chance, initiative, stealth
Charisma (CHA)Dialogue options, merchant prices, recruitment
Willpower (WILL)Mental resistance, MP regeneration
Perception (PER)Find hidden items, detect traps, read NPC intentions

3. Exploration

Avalon is divided into locations connected by exits (North, South, East, West). When you reach a new location you see:

  • A description of the area
  • Characters present — click Talk to [Name] to start dialogue
  • Travel buttons to move to adjacent locations
⚠ Random Encounters: Some locations have a chance to trigger a battle when you enter. The Whispering Glade (45%) and Marsh of Echoes (55%) are the most dangerous early areas. Stock up on Health Potions before venturing there.

4. Combat

Avalon uses turn-based combat. On your turn you choose one action:

  • Attack — deal physical damage based on your Strength
  • Use Item — consume a potion or resource from your inventory
  • Flee — attempt to escape (60% base success rate, modified by Agility)

After your action, the enemy attacks automatically. Combat ends when either side reaches 0 HP, or you successfully flee.

💡 Tip: If your HP drops below 30%, use a Health Potion immediately rather than attacking. One more enemy hit may finish you. You can buy Health Potions from Merchant Thorn in Misty Village for 20 AC each.

6. Quests & NPC Dialogue

Press Q to open your Quest Log. Quests show objectives, rewards, and the Realm they belong to.

Dialogue with NPCs is a core part of Avalon. Some choices give XP, gold, or items. Insight and Charisma unlock special dialogue paths — plan your stats accordingly.

💡 Tip: Always exhaust all dialogue options with Vara the Seer before leaving Portal Clearing. She gives 10 XP per branch explored — free XP before your first battle.

7. Saving Your Progress

Avalon saves automatically after every major action: completing dialogue, winning combat, or travelling to a new location. Your progress is stored in your browser's localStorage — it persists between sessions on the same device and browser.

Important: Clearing your browser cache or using Incognito mode will delete your save. Export / cloud save will be added in Phase 2.

8. Top 5 Beginner Tips

  1. Talk before you fight. Every NPC has useful information. Vara's full dialogue gives you free XP and unlocks the first quest objective automatically.
  2. Buy potions early. Visit Merchant Thorn in Misty Village and buy 3–5 Health Potions before entering Whispering Glade.
  3. Match your class to your playstyle. If you prefer reading and exploration, choose Seer or Mentalist. If you like fast combat and trading, choose Rogue.
  4. Read Lore Fragments. They reward Knowledge Crystals and unlock Codex entries. Some quest solutions are only revealed in lore.
  5. Flee is not defeat. Successfully fleeing is a valid strategy. You keep your items and XP, and can return after restoring HP.
