The Order of the Veil

Knights, archivists, and threshold-keepers of the Mystical Sanctum. The last institution on Avalon to remember by rule and by ritual.

Overview

The Order of the Veil is older than any nation on Avalon and younger than the island itself by a comfortable margin. It was founded in the early Era of Portals as a brotherhood of guardians for places where one world rubbed against another. A Veil-knight is not, despite the romantic illustrations, primarily a warrior. They are a custodian. Where a Portal stood, where a graveyard touched a road, where a library shelved books that no longer agreed with each other — an initiate of the Veil would be stationed, by oath, until the boundary either held or fell.

The Order draws its name from a single doctrinal image: that between the living world and everything else there hangs a veil, and that the duty of a sworn knight is not to lift this veil but to keep it whole. The wording matters. The Order has never claimed to know what is on the other side. They have only ever claimed that the side they stand on is worth standing on.

Their ritual practice is built around mnemonic discipline. Every member memorises the founding charter in full. Every meal is preceded by a recitation of one name from the rolls of the dead. Every initiate, upon taking the final oath, learns the True Name of one piece of the island — a stream, a stone, a tree — and is responsible for remembering it should anyone, mortal or otherwise, attempt to forget it. In an age before the Forgetting, this was a strange and beautiful piety. In the present age, it is an active resistance.

The Order’s relationship with the more scholarly Order of the Seer has always been close. Where the Veil holds, the Seer interprets; where the Seer dreams, the Veil watches. Vara the Seer, last of her line, is technically a guest of the Veiled Cloister rather than a member, but in the post-Forgetting collapse the two traditions function as one.

History

The founding of the Order is traditionally placed in the reign of the first Portal-King, when one of the early gateways failed and disgorged a flood of unmoored spirits into the Sanctum. The knights who held the breach for the seven nights it took to seal — reciting their dead, refusing to sleep — were the first to be called Veiled. The institution that grew from that vigil codified the practice into rule.

The Order’s greatest historical crisis prior to the Forgetting was the war that the late-era scholars later tried to unwrite. The Veil-knights stood on both sides of that war. When the scholars erased the conflict from collective memory, they erased the Order’s own dead with it. This is, by Veil reckoning, the worst injury the institution has ever sustained — not the deaths themselves, but the silencing of them.

Significance

The Order is the only Avalonian institution structurally adapted to survive the Forgetting. Their rule-bound recitations, their externalised mnemonic practices, their distributed cells — all of it predates the plague but functions, in retrospect, like a vaccine. Where ordinary households lose entire generations of memory, a Veil chapter loses individual fragments at a much slower rate. They are not immune. They are merely the slowest victims.

For the traveller, the Order is the closest thing the game offers to a faction patron. Vara’s questline, reputation tiers with surviving Veil cells, and the unlock of the Veiled Cloister as a late-game hub all hinge on the player’s willingness to take Veil oaths seriously.

In-Game Reference

The Order is named explicitly by Vara in opening dialogue and again during the prophecy unlock. Veil-knight phantom soldiers patrol the Forgotten Fortress and can occasionally be heard reciting Veil rolls in a tongue the player’s Codex cannot yet translate. The Veiled Cloister appears as a discoverable hub in Phase 2 content. Class-wise, Seer and Mentalist players unlock additional dialogue options with Vara that reference Veil doctrine directly.
