Crafting Guide for Avalon

All 5 crafting recipes, ingredient locations, XP rewards, and class-specific tips for getting the most out of Avalon's crafting system in Phase 1.

1. How Crafting Works

Avalon features a lightweight crafting system accessible from any exploration area. You combine gathered ingredients to produce stronger items than anything sold by merchants.

Opening the Crafting Panel

  • Keyboard: Press C while exploring.
  • Mouse / Touch: Click the 🔥 Craft button in the HUD toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

The crafting panel shows two columns: Recipe List (left) and Recipe Detail (right). Recipes you can craft immediately are highlighted in gold. Missing ingredients are shown in red.

Discovery System

In Phase 1, all 5 recipes are automatically discovered the moment you first open the crafting panel. You do not need to find recipe scrolls or unlock them through quests. This changes in Phase 2, where rare recipes require Codex entries or NPC teaching to unlock.

Crafting Rewards

Each successful craft gives you:

  • The crafted item (added directly to your inventory)
  • XP — ranging from 15 XP (Greater Health Potion) to 40 XP (Shadow Blade)

Crafting XP counts toward levelling up your character. Batch-crafting potions before a dungeon run is an efficient way to gain XP while also restocking your supplies.

Tip: You cannot craft during combat. Stock up on Greater Health Potions and Memory Salves before entering the Forgotten Fortress or Marsh of Echoes.

2. All Phase 1 Recipes

There are 5 recipes available in Phase 1. Two produce healing/mana items, two produce equipment upgrades, and one produces a consumable mana draught.

Recipe Details

Greater Health Potion

The most immediately useful recipe. A bought Health Potion heals 30 HP — the Greater version heals 60 HP for the cost of two basic potions plus one Marsh Herb. Since you will be farming the Marsh of Echoes for quest objectives anyway, Marsh Herbs pile up quickly. Craft these in batches of 4–6 before any boss fight.

Memory Salve

The strongest MP restoration item in Phase 1 (restores 70 MP vs. Spirit Tonic's 40 MP). Both ingredients — Moonpetal and Ashen Root — are rare drops from enemies in the Whispering Glade and Ancient Library. Merchant Thorn does not stock either. Priority craft for Seers and Mentalists, whose abilities consume significant MP.

Shadow Blade

The best weapon upgrade available in Phase 1 without Merchant Thorn's stock. Requires a single Iron Sword (drop from Phantom Soldier or purchasable from Thorn) and 3 Shadow Essence (drop from Shadow Beasts). The Shadow Blade deals Shadow-type damage, which is doubly effective against spectral enemies (Phantom Soldiers, Whispering Shade). Strongly recommended for Seers and Mentalists who cannot buy Iron Swords at a useful rate.

Spirit Ward Amulet

A defensive accessory that adds WILL and magic defence — critical stats against the Whispering Shade boss whose Cascade of Loss deals magic damage. Memory Vials drop from Marsh Wraiths and spawn as items in the Marsh of Echoes. Shadow Essence comes from Shadow Beasts. Craft this before the Forgotten Fortress — the amulet effectively reduces Cascade of Loss damage by ~20%.

Concentrated Mana Draught

Slightly weaker than Memory Salve for MP restoration (50 vs. 70 MP) but uses more common ingredients — Spirit Tonics from Merchant Thorn and Moonpetal drops. Good for Rogues who occasionally use skills but do not need the heavy MP restoration of the Memory Salve.

3. Ingredient Locations

Every ingredient has a primary and secondary source. Planning your farming route before a dungeon run saves backtracking.

Farming Notes

  • Shadow Essence is the most farmed ingredient — you need 4 total (3 for Shadow Blade + 1 for Spirit Ward). Plan 8–10 Shadow Beast kills in the Whispering Glade to collect enough with average luck.
  • Moonpetal is the rarest ingredient. It appears as a ground item in the Whispering Glade but respawns slowly. Travel between Misty Village and the Glade multiple times if needed — each trip resets the ground items on that map.
  • Ashen Root is the other bottleneck. Farm the Ancient Library after reaching it via the north exit from Misty Village. The Chronicler's area has a guaranteed spawn at first visit.
  • Ground items in the Marsh of Echoes (Marsh Herb + Memory Vial) are plentiful and respawn every time you leave and re-enter the area.
Farming Tip: The fastest way to collect Shadow Essence and Marsh Herbs in a single session: Start at Misty Village → travel east (Whispering Glade) → fight Shadow Beasts until you have 4 Shadow Essence → travel north (Marsh of Echoes) → collect ground items + fight Marsh Wraiths → travel south (Whispering Glade) to reset spawns → repeat.

4. Class-Specific Crafting Tips

Seer

The Seer's low STR and HP make crafting a survival necessity, not a luxury. Prioritise in order:

  1. Shadow Blade — transforms your pathetic physical damage into something viable against Phantom Soldiers.
  2. Spirit Ward Amulet — reduces magic damage from the Whispering Shade's Cascade of Loss, which otherwise threatens one-shots.
  3. Memory Salve × 3 — the Seer burns MP rapidly; stock these before any boss encounter.

Rogue

Rogues have the highest base HP and can survive most Phase 1 content without crafted gear. Prioritise in order:

  1. Greater Health Potion × 6+ — your high HP means you get more value per potion than any other class. Bulk-craft before the Fortress.
  2. Shadow Blade — upgrades your already-strong physical damage further, making Fortress encounters faster.
  3. Concentrated Mana Draught — Rogues use skills sparingly, but a few crafted draughts smooth out boss phases.

Mentalist

Similar to the Seer in combat fragility, but with higher INT enabling more dialogue options that skip some encounters. Prioritise in order:

  1. Memory Salve × 3 — INT-based builds rely on MP-cost abilities that quickly drain your mana pool.
  2. Spirit Ward Amulet — essential for surviving Whispering Shade's magic attacks.
  3. Greater Health Potion × 4 — you have low HP; even moderate hits require healing after each combat.

5. Recommended Crafting Order

If you are playing through Phase 1 for the first time, this is the most efficient crafting progression:

  1. Early game (Levels 1–3): Do not worry about crafting yet. Focus on reaching Misty Village and stocking basic potions from Merchant Thorn. Shadow Beasts in the Whispering Glade are your first farming target.
  2. Mid game (Levels 3–5): After 6–8 Shadow Beast kills you likely have enough Shadow Essence. Craft the Shadow Blade first — the attack boost matters for every fight from here onwards. Then craft 2–3 Greater Health Potions from any Marsh Herbs you have picked up.
  3. Pre-Fortress (Level 5–6): You are about to enter the Forgotten Fortress, which has the highest enemy density and a locked door. Craft the Spirit Ward Amulet for magic defence, then fill your remaining inventory with Greater Health Potions and Memory Salves. Keep at least 2 Spirit Tonics for the run.
  4. Pre-Boss (Level 6+): Before entering the Memoria Chamber, craft the maximum possible Greater Health Potions and Memory Salves. You want at minimum: 4 Greater Health Potions and 2 Memory Salves. Add Concentrated Mana Draughts if you have spare Spirit Tonics.

6. Crafting FAQ

Can I craft during combat?

No. Crafting is only available from the exploration screen. Use the Item action in combat to consume pre-crafted potions.

Do I need to unlock recipes?

In Phase 1, all 5 recipes are auto-discovered when you first open the crafting panel. In future phases, some recipes will require finding recipe scrolls, completing quests with The Chronicler, or reaching a certain reputation level.

What happens if I accidentally craft the wrong item?

Crafting cannot be undone. Ingredients are consumed immediately upon clicking Craft. Check your ingredient supply before confirming — the detail panel shows which items are in-stock (green) and which are missing (red).

Can I sell crafted items?

Yes. Visit Merchant Thorn in Misty Village, choose the Sell tab in his shop, and you can sell any crafted item for 60% of its base value. The Shadow Blade sells for a decent amount if you later find a better weapon.

How do I get more Iron Swords?

Iron Swords have a 5% drop rate from Phantom Soldiers in the Ancient Library and Forgotten Fortress. Merchant Thorn also sells them at standard price. You only need one Iron Sword total for the Shadow Blade recipe.

Is crafting worth the ingredient cost?

Yes — especially for the Shadow Blade and Spirit Ward Amulet, which are strictly better than anything Merchant Thorn sells in Phase 1 (he does not stock weapons or accessories). Potions from crafting also restore more HP/MP per slot than basic bought versions, which matters when inventory space is limited.
