The Beginner's Guide explains the rules of Avalon. This page explains the edges — the small, often unstated decisions that separate a hero who barely survives the Marsh from one who walks into the Memoria Chamber with three Greater Health Potions, a Spirit Ward Amulet and +8 reputation with the Chronicler. Every section below is field-tested and Phase 1 accurate.
Combat Tips
Avalon's turn-based combat looks simple on the surface — Attack, Item, Flee — but several hidden modifiers reward planning over reflex.
- Exploit elemental weaknesses. Shadow Beasts take +50% damage from fire effects, Phantom Soldiers from holy/light, Marsh Wraiths from physical iron. Always scan an enemy on first encounter so the Codex marks its weakness with the small orange icon for every future fight.
- Stack status effects before damage. A Mentalist's Confuse halves enemy accuracy for three turns. Apply it on turn one, then commit to heavy attacks. Damage dealt while a status is active counts toward boss-phase thresholds.
- Flee is a tool, not a defeat. Base flee chance is 60%, modified by Agility (+3% per point above 5). At AGI 10 you flee 75% of the time with no XP penalty. Reset, restock, and return.
- Use the under-30% rule. When your HP drops below 30%, the very next enemy hit can finish you. Always drink a Health Potion instead of attacking — never gamble the kill.
- Initiative matters more than damage. Going first on a turn with AGI 8+ lets you land a Stun or Confuse before the enemy moves, effectively giving you a free round. Stack AGI gear before raw STR if you can.
- Save your Greater Health Potions for the boss. Regular potions are cheap and farmable. Greater potions take Shadow Essence and Memory Salve ingredients you cannot rebuy in Phase 1. Bring at least four into the Memoria Chamber.
- Bosses telegraph phases. The Whispering Shade switches phases at 66% and 33% HP. When you see its description change in the combat log, expect a high-damage attack on the next enemy turn — pre-emptively heal or shield.
Exploration Tips
Avalon hides roughly a quarter of its Phase 1 content behind optional checks. The map looks small; the actual content map is twice as large.
- Click every object twice. Many interactive objects only reveal a second interaction line on a return click — for example, the Ancient Library bookshelf shows new Codex pages on the second, third and fifth interaction.
- Pump Perception before the Library. At PER 6 you find a hidden Codex stash worth 75 XP. At PER 8 you spot a trap in the Forgotten Fortress that otherwise costs 40 HP.
- Watch for off-direction exits. The Marsh of Echoes has a hidden west exit that only appears after you have read three specific Codex pages. The exit leads to a one-time loot cache containing a Spirit Tonic and 50 AC.
- Revisit Misty Village after every level-up. Old Maren and Merchant Thorn each gain new dialogue options at hero levels 2, 4 and 6. New options unlock side quests and discount tiers.
- Travel direction matters for random encounters. Entering Whispering Glade from the south (from Portal Clearing) has a higher encounter rate than entering from the north (from Ancient Library). Use the safer route when you are low on HP.
NPC Interaction Tips
Reputation is a hidden -10 to +10 value tracked per major NPC. Most players never check it; players who do unlock the best prices, the rarest quests, and the truest endings.
- Always pick the “Listen” option first. Letting an NPC finish their thought before responding adds +1 reputation silently. Interrupting subtracts 1.
- Charisma 7+ unlocks special branches. Old Maren reveals the Marsh shortcut. Merchant Thorn shows you a Spirit Ward Amulet recipe. The Chronicler offers Lore Quests with Knowledge Crystal rewards.
- Truth beats flattery. NPCs respond better to honest answers than to obvious compliments. A truthful “I do not know yet” with Vara gives +2 reputation; a flattering “You are the wisest seer alive” gives 0.
- Cash gifts work. Donating 50 AC to Old Maren gives +3 reputation instantly. At +5 she unlocks a healing meal that restores full HP, free, once per day.
- Reputation persists across deaths. Even if you reload after a bad combat, accumulated reputation is preserved. Farm dialogue branches without worrying about combat outcomes.
Resource Management
Avalon's economy uses one currency in Phase 1: Avalon Crowns (AC). Plasma Gold (PG) is reserved for Phase 3 cosmetic and convenience items and is not required for any quest or boss.
- Buy: basic Health Potions (20 AC), Travel Rations (15 AC), Iron Swords (60 AC, only one ever needed).
- Craft: Shadow Blade, Spirit Ward Amulet, Greater Health Potions, Memory Salves. None of these are stocked by Merchant Thorn in Phase 1.
- Loot, never buy: Shadow Essence and Spirit Tonics — both drop reliably from Glade and Library enemies.
Budget rule: keep a permanent reserve of 100 AC at all times for emergency Health Potions. Everything above the reserve can be spent or converted into crafting ingredients.
Save Strategy
Avalon writes to localStorage after every major action: dialogue completion, combat victory, location travel and item purchase. There is no traditional save-slot system in Phase 1, but you do have three practical save patterns:
- Auto-save (default). Reliable and silent. Best for casual play.
- Manual save (HUD button). Forces an immediate write. Use before any high-stakes decision — especially before opening the Memoria Chamber doors.
- Browser-profile backup. Power users keep a second browser profile dedicated to Avalon. If a future patch breaks something, the spare profile preserves your run untouched.
Important: clearing browser data, switching browsers or using incognito mode will erase your save. Export to JSON is on the Phase 2 roadmap.
Easter Eggs
Avalon rewards curiosity. Without spoiling the punchlines, here are five hidden references for attentive players:
- The hero-name secret. Starting a New Game with certain names triggers a unique opening line from Vara. Morgan is the most famous — try others themed around mystical horror or betrayal.
- The fifth bookshelf click. Examining the same bookshelf in the Ancient Library five times in a row reveals a hidden room with a Codex page and a small XP reward.
- The story crossover. One Codex page names a character from a featured Portal Avalon story. Find the page, then read the story to complete the loop.
- The portal whisper. Standing still on Portal Clearing for 60 seconds without clicking anything triggers a one-time atmospheric line of narration. Once heard, it does not reappear.
- The marsh reflection. Examining the still water in the Marsh of Echoes at exactly hero Level 4 unlocks a Codex entry no other action reveals.
Common Mistakes
- Skipping dialogue. Players who click past Vara miss 40 free XP, the auto-pickup of the first quest, and a hint that explicitly names the first Seal's Realm.
- Entering Whispering Glade at Level 1 without potions. A bad RNG draw of two Shadow Beasts will end your run. Always farm Portal Clearing to Level 2 first.
- Spending all AC on potions. You will need 60 AC for the Iron Sword and 80+ AC for the Greater Potion ingredients near the boss. Keep a reserve.
- Ignoring Perception and Charisma. Players who dump every stat point into Strength miss 30% of the content and 50% of the reputation rewards.
- Rushing to the Memoria Chamber. The Whispering Shade is balanced for Level 6 with crafted gear. Attempting it at Level 4 with bought equipment is the single most common cause of a hard reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to farm XP in Avalon?
Exhaust every dialogue branch with Vara the Seer and the Chronicler before leaving their locations — each branch grants 10 XP. Then repeatedly clear Whispering Glade encounters: Shadow Beasts give 35 XP and respawn each visit. A focused 20-minute farming session can take a Level 1 hero to Level 4 with no risk.
How do I find hidden locations in Avalon?
Hidden locations unlock through Perception checks (PER 6+) in the Ancient Library, a Charisma check (CHA 7+) with Old Maren, and one secret exit from the Marsh of Echoes that only appears after reading three specific Codex pages. Always click every interactive object in a room twice — many secrets only reveal on a second look.
What are elemental weaknesses in Avalon combat?
Shadow Beasts take +50% damage from fire-type spells, Phantom Soldiers take +50% from holy/light effects, Marsh Wraiths are weak to physical iron weapons, and the Whispering Shade boss takes bonus damage when you have a Memory Salve active. The Codex marks weaknesses with a small orange icon once you scan an enemy.
How does NPC reputation work?
Each major NPC tracks a reputation value from -10 to +10. Successful Charisma dialogue choices add +1 or +2; lying or threatening adds -1 to -3. At +5 reputation Merchant Thorn offers a 20% discount, Old Maren shares the location of the Marsh shortcut, and the Chronicler unlocks Lore Quests with Knowledge Crystal rewards.
Should I craft or buy potions in Avalon?
Buy basic Health Potions from Merchant Thorn for early game — they cost only 20 AC and crafting requires Shadow Essence you can use for better items. Craft Greater Health Potions and Memory Salves yourself before the Whispering Shade boss; bought equivalents cost 4–5x more AC than the ingredients. Always craft the Shadow Blade once you have the parts — Thorn never stocks weapons.
Are there easter eggs in Avalon?
Yes. There are at least five hidden references for attentive players, including a Codex page that names a character from a Portal Avalon story, a hidden room beneath the Ancient Library reached by examining the bookshelf five times in a row, and a unique line of dialogue from Vara if you start a New Game with the hero name “Morgan”.
Can I lose my save by clearing browser cookies?
Yes. Avalon uses localStorage, which is wiped when you clear cookies, site data or browser cache. Manual save export to a JSON file is on the Phase 2 roadmap. For now, keep one browser dedicated to Avalon and avoid private/incognito sessions for serious runs.
What is the most common mistake new players make?
Skipping dialogue. Players who click through Vara's introduction miss 40 free XP, the first quest auto-pickup, and a hint that explicitly names which Realm contains the first Seal. The second most common mistake is rushing into Whispering Glade at Level 1 with no potions.
